Last trip of 2018 E.C

Five years ago, on September 11, I recorded a video for my future five year self. I asked myself a bunch of questions, and I’ve never opened that video since the day I recorded it.

Now I’m only 3 days away from finally watching it ,and honestly, part of me is excited and part of me is anxious😅.

I’m sure I’ve achieved so many things that I once thought I would, and I’m really curious to hear what my younger self had to say.

I don’t even remember what questions I asked. It’s such a vague memory, but I do remember one: “Are you still in tech?” or something along those lines.

And one thing I know for sure, I’ll be answering that one proudly.

Anyways, I’ll come back to this after September 11 and reflect on what my five years ago self had to say.

✨ Our IWD panel was filled with wisdom, resilience, and practical advice for breaking barriers in tech. Here are some highlights from our incredible speakers:

https://www.linkedin.com/in/hermeladubale/ – Tech Recruiter
Hermela emphasized the importance of preparation: build a strong portfolio, practice LeetCode (hard problems count!), craft a standout resume, and always research the company before interviews.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/mastewal-hailemaryam-4ba76b217 – AI/ML Engineer
Her journey showed us the power of consistency and resilience. Coming from another field, she had to learn quickly — proving that determination can bridge any gap.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/kidist-angota-4bb7751a3 – Product Manager
Kidist reminded us that your background doesn’t define your future. Opportunities exist where you build your skills. She also highlighted the art of balancing user needs with business goals in product management.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/kidist-amdu/ – Software Developer
Kidist shared that self-doubt is natural, but looking back at your journey shows how far you’ve come. Her advice: treat AI as your partner, master specific programming language deeply, and don’t spread yourself too thin.

💜 Collective Insight
To break patterns in tech: get involved in a community, find peers to stay accountable, and support each other along the way.

🚀 Introducing http://Dataset.ET/

The future of AI should speak Ethiopian languages.

Today we are launching http://Dataset.ET/ — an open community initiative to build the largest dataset for Ethiopian languages.

Why this matters:
Most AI systems today barely understand Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Tigrinya, Somali, and many other Ethiopian languages. Without datasets, AI will ignore our languages.

http://Dataset.ET/ is changing that.

What we are building:
• Speech datasets
• Text datasets
• Community-validated language corpora
• Open infrastructure for Ethiopian AI

How you can help:
1️⃣ Record sentences using our Telegram bot
2️⃣ Validate recordings from other contributors
3️⃣ Help expand datasets for Ethiopian languages

No technical skills needed — just your voice and your language.

🤖 Start contributing:

Together we can teach AI to understand Ethiopia.

📢 Community leaders & channel admins:
If you run a Telegram group or community and believe Ethiopian languages should be part of the future of AI, we would really appreciate it if you could share this post with your community.

Your support can help thousands of people contribute their language and voice to this initiative. Thank you!

New week, let’s lock in! 🔒
